The Power of Chant | Rabbi Shefa Gold
Very refreshing and informative at the same time. My sincere respects to H. Jun 21, Sharlane Naidoo rated it really liked it. I got this book as a parting gift from a good friend of my mum's and enjoyed reading it at the age of I just love going back to this book, read it about 4 times already. Jan 18, Faith rated it liked it Shelves: religion. I'm giving this a 4, because that's how interesting I found it.
I really loved reading it. I also found myself constantly thinking what a shame it is that the Hare Krishna movement which based on this history and explanation of its practices and philosophy, is a not only genuine but beautiful spiritual path has come to be characterized as nothing more than a dangerous, creepy, brain-washing cult. The interviews with the Beatles were fascinating, as was hearing the story of the Hare Krishna move I'm giving this a 4, because that's how interesting I found it.
The interviews with the Beatles were fascinating, as was hearing the story of the Hare Krishna movement coming first to New York and then to San Fransisco, and the effect that it had on the young people there. It's just as much about the power of music, the power of community, and the power of love, as it is about God which is the same thing anyway. It's the story of young, disillusioned people actually having a vibrant and powerful spiritual experience, and totally freaking out everybody around them. Dec 01, Dave Harrison rated it it was amazing Shelves: prabhupada-books.
George Harrison says, Life is like a piece of string with a lot of knots tied in it. The knots are the karma you're born with from all your past lives, and the object of human life is to try and undo all those knots. That's what chanting and meditation in God consciousness can do. Otherwise, you simply tie another ten knots each time you try to undo one knot.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada, for who are we to know about such deep matters of inner bliss and unlimited joy. Read Prabhupada books, chant this simple Maha-Mantra and see the miracles, that follows. Hare Krsna. Jun 27, Sharon rated it really liked it. I got given this book by a Hare Krishna at the Strawberry Fair in Cambridge as they invited us to one of their sumptuous vegetarian feasts and for years it sat on my shelf unread. I'm really glad I at last gave it a go.
I don't really follow any spiritual movement but I am open-minded and interested in all. This book is a fantastic insight the Hare Krishna's. It gives a little bit of history, practice and talks of how it fits into everyday life. Reading it will take away that comical image you h I got given this book by a Hare Krishna at the Strawberry Fair in Cambridge as they invited us to one of their sumptuous vegetarian feasts and for years it sat on my shelf unread.
Reading it will take away that comical image you have of the devotees and make it all seem more real and relevant. The conversations with John Lennon and George Harrison add another cultural edge to the book. A really interesting read whether you plan to take up chanting or not. Maybe if I were the type of Beatles fan who cared about all the gossip this would have been more interesting and I would have actually finished june I had hoped this would be an interesting little read about mindfulness and meditation and maybe a little bit of history?

But no harm done; it was free from a monk I met in town so I can't really complain too much I guess. I thought this might be a good thing to try - you know, anything that says it'll make you happy is going to be appealing. It turned out to be a lot more religion-based than I expected, as I thought it was kind of an atheist, purely-spiritual thing, so as an atheist that created a bit of a block because it's sort of saying you can't do this if you don't believe in God and, well, I can't just force myself to believe in God when I have all these reasons not to floating around in my head.

This book gives an interesting account of the history of the Hare Krishna movement, and describes well it's rise to popularity in the west a few decades ago. The interviews with Harrison, Lennon and Ginsberg are appealing. When it comes to arguing the case for Hare Krishnaism, I found the arguments to be not particularly sound, but I'm not a Hare Krishna, so that's expected. Anyway, it's an easy, short read, nicely structured, and provides a good introduction to a very interesting religious group This book gives an interesting account of the history of the Hare Krishna movement, and describes well it's rise to popularity in the west a few decades ago.
Anyway, it's an easy, short read, nicely structured, and provides a good introduction to a very interesting religious group. I only own this book because I was given it by a monk well, I say "given it", I was told he wasn't asking any money for the books before asking for money for them. I may or may not bother to read it, most likely it will go to a friend who is into this sort of thing, for now it will loiter on the table. The positive reviews on GoodReads are making me at least want to read a couple of pages though.
Sep 11, Kiera Usman rated it it was amazing. Life is crazy, busy and hectic. And we get caught up in our thoughts. Always thinking and our minds going mph. Meditation teaches you to switch off and get to know the real you. Deep inside not all the sub personalities we pretend to be sometimes. Absolutely brilliant book to read, highly recommended.

Mar 28, Jane rated it really liked it Shelves: hindu-vedic-faith , re-read , biography. Get it cheap. Great on the how and why of a spiritual practice and a nice edition to any Beatles fan collection. I especially liked that Prabu said you can chant using any name for God so its universal for many though there is beauty in the Krishna stories.
